One of the ecological treasures of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mt. Diablo State Park is a breathtaking destination with scenic hiking trails, dramatic rock formations, overlooks, waterfalls, fascinating wildlife, fossils and beautiful wildflowers. Hike and bike to the mountain's 3,849-foot summit and enjoy panoramic vistas - from the High Sierra to the Central Valley to the Golden Gate Bridge - or explore remote trails by horseback. Mt. Diablo is the most popular hiking, cycling and horseback riding spot in the East Bay. Hikers can see more of the earth's land from the top of Mt. Diablo than from any peak in the country!

Mt. Diablo State Park is a sacred hiking destination with miles of challenging trails that wind to the high summit and bless hikers with the most jaw-dropping views in California. One of the most exciting hiking trails, the Loop Trail offers 6.6 miles of amazing scenery and spectacular views just below the peak. Trek the Juniper Trail to the Mount Diablo Valley Overlook, or go explore the Summit Trail, North Peak Trail and Eagle Peak Trail. Take Donner Canyon Trail to the glistening Falls at Donner Creek. See the mountain's natural wildlife at Deer Flat, a moderate1.6-mile hike from Juniper Camp.

Rock City

Hike, boulder and climb through 180 million years of geologic time and unique formations at Rock City. Explore the dramatic sandstone rocks, cliffs, strange outcroppings, and small caves. Climb Sentinel Rock to the large domed peak, and discover Fossil Ridge with exposed fossils of the Miocene, Eocene, Cretaceous, and Jurassic periods, or climb.


  • Can I drive to experience the mountain views?

    Yes. There are several scenic roads that you can drive around the mountain and to just below the summit of Mt. Diablo. Visit the observation deck to enjoy panoramic views all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. The roads through the park are amazing for a motorcycle ride.
  • What are the park’s best activities and sights?

    Mt. Diablo State Park is a stellar destination for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, rock climbing, and nature discovery. Trek through Mitchell Canyon, hike the Mary Bowerman Trail and climb up Sentinel Rock and Castle Rock. Check out the Visitor Center in the stone building atop Mount Diablo's highest peak and see exhibits and films that chronicle the majesty, history and geology of the mountain. Walk up to the Observation Deck to see the most amazing views in the world, or look at ancient marine fossils in the sandstone walls of the summit building. Discover the Diablo Valley Overlook at 3,200 feet and enjoy views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
